G Flip plays The Foundry in Philly on first US headlining tour

Photos and words by Taylor Shields

Australian artist G Flip played The Foundry in Philly on Thursday, October 5th, touring their latest album DRUMMER which just came out this past August. This marks G Flip’s first headlining tour in the US, after years of success down under. I had the chance to catch G perform their first US headline show ever at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn back in 2018. Now five years later, G Flip is hitting the drums harder than ever and selling out shows across America.

The energy level in the room felt electric on Thursday night, as G Flip played to a packed room, supported by Finnish-American and fellow nonbinary artist Miki Ratsula, whose debut album I’ll Be Fine If I Want To released on Friday. As G Flip took the stage, they began the show where they’ve always seemed most comfortable – behind the drums. G Flip shows off an impressive display of musical talent, able to rotate through an array of instruments, and pound away at the drums without missing a beat or a vocal note.

G Flip is one of those artists who really connects with their audience. Crowd banter and jokes paired with a confident stage presence makes the shows feel interactive and participatory, which G seems fueled by, jumping over the barricade and into the crowd at one point pretty early on in the night, and swinging from the venue’s rafters throughout. You leave the show wondering how this person is not more well known, confused why their massive amount of talent has been constrained to small club venues when everything about them screams “arena level rock star”.

The setlist was made up of old favorites, such as 2018’s debut single “About You”, which G recorded entirely in their bedroom, and 2019’s “Lover”, while primarily showcasing the new album, playing tracks like “Worst Person Alive” and “Be Your Man”, written about their current relationship with Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause. G Flip’s tour heads back west later this month with shows in Denver, Salt Lake City, and the Pacific Northwest, before finishing in Los Angeles.
