Horsegirl and Lifeguard performed at House of Independents in Asbury Park, NJ on Saturday, July 22nd. Emerging from Chicago’s burgeoning scene of young bands, both acts are signed to stalwart indie label Matador Records. The bands share more than a record label, though – Lifeguard’s Isaac Lowenstein (drums) is siblings with Horsegirl’s Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals). While their sound draws influence from bygone post-punk/indie rock, make no mistake – they make music for the kids.
Released last summer, Versions of Modern Performance is Horsegirl’s impressive debut LP that they wrote and recorded while still in their teens. Debuting a number of new songs on tour, their sophomore follow-up has already been recorded. With Lowenstein and Nora Cheng (guitar, vocals) trading vocal melodies and Gigi Reece on drums, the band give off a carefree “too cool for school” energy. Furthermore, the riffs Lowenstein coaxes from her Squier VI bass is a vibe all its own. By the sound of their new songs, their forthcoming LP promises to be a great one that will undoubtedly be their big breakout. Joined by Isaac from Lifeguard, they finished out their set with an energetic performance of Versions track “Billy”.
Horsegirl will be touring through the end of summer and will be playing some Midwest shows in September with The Breeders. See all of their upcoming tour dates here. Check out their music video for “Anti-glory” below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show.
