Fresh off the release of their outstanding debut LP You’re Better (via Self Aware Records), Charlotte, NC-based trio Faye played Flemington DIY on Wednesday, October 19th along with Separatr and Prehistoric Sun. You’re Better is a wondrously scuzzy indie rock album that’s a kiss-off to misogynistic naysayers the band has faced since forming in 2015.
Performing solo, Central Jersey based artist Prehistoric Sun started off the night. While Prehistoric Sun’s brand of grunge-y rock might best be appreciated in a full band setting, I was blown away by C.J. Coward’s vocals and hooks on nostalgic songs like “You’ll Find Me“. C.J. also played a super rad rendition of “Dumb” by Nirvana.
Originally formed in Bellingham, WA, indie electropop duo Separatr sold everything they owned and drove across the country in their Winnebago – they’ve been based in the Central Jersey Shore area since the summer and are planning to stay put at least through spring. A new EP is in the works, but you can listen to their most recently released track “Folie” here. They’re just about the nicest folks I’ve ever met and I’ll be sure to catch them again. FYI, they’ll be playing a free show at Jimmy’s Lounge in Kearny on October 27th.
Although it was a scant crowd that turned out for the show, that didn’t keep Faye from rockin’ hard. Their magnificently fuzzy bass/guitar tones are the straight up cat’s pajamas. It was thrilling to hear You’re Better tracks like “No Vibes” and “Dream Punches” performed live. Of all the Jersey venues this band could’ve played, I felt super honored to witness them at our humble DIY space. Stream You’re Better below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show.
