Instrumental math-rock band Covet performed at the TLA in Philly on Thursday, November 1st. The trio, consisting of Yvette Young (guitar), David Adamiak (bass), and Forrest Rice (drums), are currently supporting Polyphia on their month-long North American tour. While playing as openers on this tour, they have their own headline-worthy following that showed up to the venue early to catch their set. While Covet might be categorized most squarely into the math-rock genre, their music possesses an emotional ebb and flow that is highly influenced by post-rock, as well as classical music elements. Their arrangements are complex yet melodic and keep you engaged as a listener, especially when performed live. It’s a marvel to watch them play as they make it look effortless. This is “serious” music, but Covet makes it profoundly approachable – while Adamiak shared only a few words with the audience between songs, the crowd fed off of their positive vibes and occasional exchanged smiles with not a hint of cockiness or attitude. The only disappointment was their set’s short duration, which clocked in at just over 30 minutes.

The band just released a music video for “Howl” (from their latest album Effloresce), which I describe as a spooky Wicker Man-style murder party. Watch that video below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show (including Polyphia).
