Courtney Barnett blew the roof off of The Fillmore Philly for her show on Tuesday, 10/23 (Philly’s own Waxahatchee was the opener). The Jelloman himself, Paul Vile (brother of Kurt Vile), also made a special appearance serving up Jell-O shots outside the venue for the entirety of the show.
Preferring to let her music do the talking, Barnett progressed through her set with determination and little small talk and kept the energy levels up high. She played through nearly the entirety of her latest LP Tell Me How You Really Feel, but treated the audience to quintessential tracks from her prior releases sometimes i sit and think, and sometimes i just sit and A Sea Of Split Peas. Midway through her set, she was joined on stage by Waxahatchee/Katie Crutchfield for a cover of Elyse Wienberg’s “Houses”. Barnett finished out her set with a double punch of “Charity” and “History Eraser”, before launching into a 3-song encore capped off by “Pedestrian At Best” (during which she totally shrugged off skipping the 2nd verse like a true friggin’ rockstar).
