Read previous – Snail Mail and Momma @ The Stone Pony
Brooklyn-based indie/alt-rock band Momma, fronted by Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, played their final show of the year at Asbury Lanes on Saturday, November 22nd in support of their Welcome to My Blue Sky LP released earlier this year. A follow-up to their spectacular Household Name LP, Welcome to My Blue Sky is a fuzzed-out, nostalgia-soaked coming-of-age album inspired by struggles born from their 2022 tour. My first incidental encounter with Momma came prior to then when they opened for Snail Mail at The Stone Pony – I was blown away by their performance with Friedman and Weingarten seamlessly trading vocals and harmonizing with each other over melodic grunge guitars on tracks like “Medicine”.
For their performance at the Lanes, they kicked off their set with Household Name track “Rip Off”. They followed-up with “Last Kiss”, a heavy shoegaze-tinged track from Blue Sky. The band alternated between tracks from both albums for the remainder of their set which delighted both longtime fans and newcomers. Friedman and Weingarten were effortlessly cool delivering their layered and breezy vocal harmonies on tracks like “I Want You (Fever)” and “Motorbike”. Toward the end of their set, they slowed it down with title track “Welcome to My Blue Sky” before amping it up again with “Rodeo” and “Speeding 72” which left everyone in the crowd buzzing.
Momma will be back in 2026 with some festival dates – stay tuned for additional tour dates here. The band also recently released a deluxe version of Welcome to My Blue Sky which includes 5 additional tracks (including b-side “Cross Your Heart” and a cover of “Christian Brothers” by Elliott Smith).
