Read previous – Waxahatchee and Snail Mail at The Stone Pony Summer Stage
Snail Mail (the moniker of singer/songwriter/guitarist Lindsey Jordan) returned to The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park on 7/19 along with alternative/indie-rock stalwarts Dinosaur Jr. The unexpected (but rad) pairing have joined forces for a co-headlining summer tour. It’s been nearly 4 years since the release of Snail Mail’s tremendous sophomore LP Valentine – since then, there have been a couple of musical releases including the Valentine (Demos) EP (featuring standout track “Easy Thing”) and a cover of Smashing Pumpkin’s “Tonight, Tonight”. That track was recorded for the A24 film I Saw The TV Glow, in which Jordan also had a starring role as a character in the fictional Nickelodeon-esque horror anthology The Pink Opaque. Playing as a 4-piece, they performed tracks from their breakout debut LP Lush, as well as Valentine. As expected, due to her alternate tunings, Jordan frequently switched guitars between songs (I counted no fewer than 4 different guitars); however, transitions ran smoothly with minimal delay. For their first surprise, they performed a cover of This Is Lorelei’s “Two Legs“. While known for her signature vocal phrasing and rasp (less so after her 2021 vocal cord surgery), on “Two Legs” Jordan delivers a performance reminiscent of the late Elliott Smith. Snail Mail also teased the release of LP3 with the performance of 2 new tracks titled “Dead End” and “Nowhere”. Both tracks sounded relatively different in tone from any of their previous releases, so I’m excited to see how LP3 turns out. If their new NASCAR-inspired merch is any indication, I’m guessing it’ll be pretty badass.
Snail Mail will be continuing their tour with Dinosaur Jr. through the first week of August. See all of their upcoming tour dates here. Listen to “Easy Thing” from their Valentine (Demos) EP below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show including co-headliner Dinosaur Jr.
