Waxahatchee and Snail Mail at The Stone Pony Summer Stage

Along with support from Snail Mail and Tim Heidecker, Waxahatchee (the musical project of singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield) brought her Tigers Blood tour to the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park over Labor Day weekend. A sequel to her acclaimed 2020 LP Saint Cloud, Tigers Blood sees Crutchfield hitting her artistic stride and further exploring her country-folk sound. On this tour, Waxahatchee is performing Tigers Blood in its entirety along with tracks from Saint Cloud. They also performed covers from Crutchfield’s musical side-project Plains. Kicking off their set with Tigers Blood opener “3 Sisters“, Crutchfield gifted her trucker cap to an audience member at the front of the crowd midway through the song – it was a sweet and no doubt unforgettable moment for that young fan. After a sprawling set of 20+ songs, Waxahatchee kicked off their 3-song encore with unreleased track “Much Ado About Nothing” before ending the night with Saint Cloud track “Fire”.

Compared to previous outings, Snail Mail brought along a smaller band for their opening performance. They still sounded surprisingly full as a 3-piece and Lindsey Jordan’s signature rasp is as extraordinary as ever. It feels like an eternity since the release of their 2021 sophomore LP Valentine; however, it continues to be on regular rotation in my household along with debut LP Lush. Guitar swaps occurred seamlessly after Jordan and co. performed banger after banger including “Heat Wave”, “Pristine”, “Thinning”, and “Forever (Sailing)”. After ending their short set with “Valentine”, Jordan departed the stage with a squeaky and high-pitched ‘thank you’. They didn’t perform their recently released cover of Smashing Pumpkin’s “Tonight, Tonight”, but you can check out the official audio here.

Waxahatchee will be continuing her North American tour through September, including 2 dates at Union Transfer Philly. See all of her upcoming tour dates here. Check out the video for Tigers Blood lead single “Right Back to It” below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show.
