Read previous – Covet goes Frog Wild at The Foundry!
Bay Area math rock trio Covet are currently touring in support of their third LP catharsis, released this past month via Triple Crown Records. They rolled into Brooklyn Bowl Philly on Friday, April 28th along with openers Alejandro Aranda (aka scarypoolparty) and altopalo. Led by guitarist extraordinaire (and occasional singer) Yvette Young, they come with a new lineup rounded out by Brandon Dove (bass) and Jessica Burdeaux (drums).
Covet kicked off their set with catharsis opening track “coronal”, a shoegaze-y number featuring Young on vocals and a brand new sound. They followed with “firebird”, a breezy track inspired by the first car Young’s mother owned after immigrating to the US. Midway through their set, Young switched to keys for “interlude” before launching into “smolder” which saw Brandon Dove swapping his bass for the violin. While best known for dazzling on guitar, Young sparkled on vocals on “parachute” from 2020 sophomore LP technicolor – a first, they were joined by Aranda on keys for the song’s outro. I couldn’t help but marvel at their performance of “shibuya”, the quintessential track from their 2018 debut LP effloresce. While technical prowess is the math rock cost of entry, Covet’s emotionally charged and melodic songwriting is what sets them apart into a genre of their own. The last song of their set was catharsis album closer “lovespell”, an aptly named track and Young’s favorite from the album. After embracing on stage, they chose rather to spare the crowd their vocal cords and stayed on for an encore of “atreyu”.
Yvette Young is featured in the June issue of Premier Guitar – it’s a great primer where she talks about everything from gear, tunings, and how she got started in music. Covet will be wrapping up their catharsis tour in mid-May, but see all of their upcoming tour dates here.
