Read previous – Interview with C.J. Red Mouth
Cats On Film, C.J. Red Mouth, and Mango Core played Flemington DIY on Saturday, August 6th. You can check out our show preview and interview with C.J. Red Mouth here.
For their 2nd show ever, Mango Core performed another great set and continue to build buzz as a must see local act. While they included some covers (including “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and “Poor Boxer Shorts” by Mom Jeans), it’s their original songs “Deflection” and “My Everything Bagels Are Moldy” that really captivate with their twinkly riffs and biting lyrics. Hopefully, they release recorded versions of these songs soon.
C.J. Red Mouth mesmerized on acoustic guitar as she performed songs from her recently released Wick EP, as well as previously unreleased tracks. She started off her set with “The Garlic Song” which I recognized from her recent NPR Tiny Desk submission – it’s a fantastic song that she sings with such emotion and her vocal phrasing is just amazing. If you’re a fan of Bury Me At Makeout Creek-era Mitski (especially tracks like “Texas Reznikoff” and “Last Words of a Shooting Star”), you’ll love C.J. Red Mouth. Stay tuned for the release of her upcoming Greenhouse EP.
Cats On Film is a 50/50 collaboration between artists Matty (aka, Anxiety Superstar) and Amanda (aka, Lonesome Joan). They also happen to be the nicest people ever. During their set, they swapped drum and guitar duties for their respective songs. They closed out the night with “Dead Fish Swimming Upstream“, a song about Giles Corey who was pressed to death during the Salem witch trials and whose last words were “more weight”. Did I mention their songs are sad?
