Indigo De Souza at The Stone Pony

Photos and words by Rosi Lamela

I drove down the shore (as us North Jerseyans call it) this past weekend to catch the happening show featuring Lucy Dacus and Indigo De Souza at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park. We originally had plans to catch Indigo De Souza in January for a headlining show at Union Transfer in Philly; however, that show ended up getting postponed, assumingly due to Omicron (that show is now scheduled for May). Luck would have it we’d get our chance to catch her along with one of our all-time favs, Lucy Dacus, who does not mess around when it comes to openers. Check out our coverage of Lucy’s last show in Philly where she brought along Bartees freakin’ Strange.

Indigo De Souza is a relatively new artist on my radar; however, I’ve been listening to her latest album Any Shape You Take on repeat for weeks. De Souza’s music is so intimate but has a unique sound that is both catchy and sometimes heartbreaking. Hearing songs like “17” and “Real Pain” live was pretty damn nice. After getting kicked out of the photo pit, I had to push my way through the crowd to find a place to breathe and landed in a spot next to a TV monitor where I enjoyed the rest of her amazing set in the comfort of my own personal space. De Souza might have just been the opener for this sold out show, but a good portion of the crowd was there for her and she knew it. They didn’t play my favorite song “Take Off Ur Pants” from I Love My Mom which means I totally need to hit up one of their upcoming headlining shows this Spring where they’ll play a longer set. In addition to the aforementioned Philly show, they’ll be playing 2 dates at MHOW in Brooklyn – check out all of the upcoming tour dates here.

This was my third time catching Lucy Dacus live. She was unfortunately dealing with 2 herniated discs on tour so she performed laying on a couch which was pretty wild. At first I thought it was part of the gig since there was a TV on set like the album cover of Home Video, but unfortunately it was due to the injury. Dacus managed to give us a kick ass show lying down while even playing the guitar at times. She played “Triple Dog Dare”, “First Time”, and “Partner in Crime” from her latest release. The big hit was her tribute to Bruce with her trademark cover of “Dancing in the Dark” while her dad joined her on stage. It was a no brainer for her as she expressed her excitement playing the iconic song at a landmark venue like The Stone Pony. She did not disappoint the Jersey crowd. She closed the night with my favorite song “Night Shift” which always gets an intimate sing-along from the crowd. Sadly, no photos from that set since my view was primarily that of a TV monitor from the back of the crowd and photos of the backs of people’s heads isn’t very exciting. FYI, if you’re in the Philly area this Friday, you can catch her at World Cafe Live where she’ll be playing a Free At Noon hosted by WXPN. You can RSVP for your tickets here.
