California-based gajillion-member band Just Friends brought their first headlining tour to the First Unitarian Church in Philly on Thursday, October 3rd. In true DIY fashion, they brought along a jam-packed lineup of bands including Hotline TNT, The Sonder Bombs, and NJ-based Save Face. Just Friends released their genre-defying sophomore LP Nothing But Love in 2018 and have since toured with labelmates Mom Jeans and played all the dates of the recent Sad Summer Fest.
Openers The Sonder Bombs have been on our radar ever since the release of their excellent debut LP Modern Female Rockstar, with standout tracks like “Atom” and “Twinkle Lights”, as well as the more recently released single “I Don’t Have One Anymore“. Singer/guitarist/ukulele player Willow Hawks seriously impresses with her vocal delivery and the band’s energy and stage presence make them a headline-worthy act to watch out for.
Already amped up by the night’s openers, the crowd was primed to party and Just Friends vocalist Sam Kless was host and emcee. Audience members obliged Kless’ calls to form a circle pit and wall of death and the band eagerly matched their ecstatic energy. As if it wasn’t already enough of a party, Just Friends’ set concluded with what seemed like the entirety of the church basement’s sweaty crowd on stage. Fun times, indeed.
