Preview: Japanese Breakfast at Asbury Lanes (Friday, 12/28)

Japanese Breakfast, the music project of Philadelphia-based songwriter Michelle Zauner, will be performing at Asbury Lanes on Friday, December 28th (a limited number of tickets are still available here). She’ll be following that up with 3-nights straight at Johnny Brenda’s in Philly, but those shows are already all sold out.

While having not yet released a follow-up to 2017’s excellent Soft Sounds from Another Planet LP, Zauner (an inspiring and prolific artist) has kept herself plenty busy. She is currently featured in an amazing cover story in Issue 115 of Fader Magazine. In it, she talks about her inspirations and ongoing projects/directions including working on an instrumental score for the video game Sable (which will be released in 2019) – the game’s trailer (featuring a new song “Glider”) is a work of art that I cannot stop re-watching. The writing and photography in that story are top notch and must be read. Also required reading is her essay in The New Yorker (titled “Crying in H Mart”). Anybody with an ethnic (especially Asian-American) up-bringing will immediately feel solidarity with her emotions and relate to her detailed descriptions of the importance of food and how it relates to both cultural and individual identity. In my opinion, as far as artists are concerned, there’s no band more relevant or current than Japanese Breakfast.

See the rest of Japanese Breakfast’s upcoming tour dates below and watch the music video for “Everybody Wants to Love You” (from the band’s 2016 debut LP Psychopomp).
