Alvvays, Snail Mail, and Hatchie @ Union Transfer | Philadelphia, PA (9/29/2018)

Read preview post here

Alvvays, Snail Mail, and Hatchie performed their first of 2 sold out shows at Union Transfer in Philly on Saturday, 9/29. With such a fully stacked and dreamy lineup, the kids lined up early and packed the venue for opening band Hatchie. They played through all of the songs from debut EP Sugar & Spice and closed out their set big with “Sure“, a dreamy and shoegaze-y feel-good pop song a la the Cocteau Twins.

Still fresh off the release of their debut LP Lush, Snail Mail are headliners in their own right. Given their penultimate billing, they played a short set consisting mostly of their bangers; however, Lindsey finished out the set with a quiet and convincingly earnest solo cover of Courtney Love’s “Second Most Beautiful Girl In The World” (aka, her “favorite song in the world”). In a concert setting, Lindsey gives you all the feelings, in part due to her vocal dynamics and inflection which is full of character and spunkiness – every crack and turn just mesmerizes you and punches you in the gut. I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us for her next album. See Snail Mail’s full setlist below.

Setlist:
(Opening Jam)
– Heat Wave
– Golden Dream
– Thinning
– Speaking Terms
– Let’s Find an Out
– Full Control
– Pristine
– Second Most Beautiful Girl In The World
(Courtney Love cover)

Snail Mail will be heading out on a whirlwind international tour (Asia/UK/Europe) and will return back to the area again in late-November when they play a headlining show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City (tickets available here) – they’ll be closing out their tour with a show at MSG supporting Interpol and Car Seat Headrest on 2/16. See all of their upcoming tour dates here.

Alvvays front-woman, Molly Rankin, mentioned that she was sick and expressed concern about her voice; however, her vocals still amazed the crowd and were no worse for wear. Knowing exactly how to excite the crowd, they made several Philly sports references throughout their set including one regarding the much beloved/maligned true Philadelphian Gritty. For their encore, they were joined on stage by Harriette Pilbeam (Hatchie) and Lindsey Jordan (Snail Mail) for a cover of The Hummingbirds “Alimony”.
