Missouri-based indie pop trio Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin performed at MilkBoy Philly on Thursday, 6/27 (Ha Ha Tonka and Ezra Furman opened). SSLYBY have just wrapped up a short tour and will be releasing a new LP at the end of summer titled Fly By Wire (due out 9/17). Rockin’ The ‘Burbs had a chance to chat with Phil Dickey (vocals/guitar/drums) before the show and learned more about SSLYBY’s upcoming album, as well as their recent trip to Russia where they served as official US cultural ambassadors – make sure to read the full interview here.
Despite the active tornado warning in effect, MilkBoy Philly was packed with an enthusiastic and vocal crowd. The sauna-like conditions and overall lack of ventilation took nothing away from any of the night’s performances; however, it certainly did contribute to the funk of hoagies in the air. SSLYBY held nothing back and started off their set with “Oregon Girl” (from their debut album Broom), followed by fan-favorites from Pershing and Let It Sway. They also played the new track “Nightwater Girl” (listen to that song below). Towards the end of their set, Dickey made several unanswered pleas for water then resorted to stripping of his E. coli-laden shirt. For their finale, they brought both opening acts (plus friends) on stage for a riotous rendition of “Modern Mystery”.
SSLYBY will likely be back in Philly before the end of the year – keep up-to-date with their upcoming tour dates here. They’ll also be releasing their documentary Discussions with Russians (watch the trailer here), as well as the music video for “Nightwater Girl”, later this summer.
Don’t forget to read our recent interview with opener Ezra Furman here. His new album Day of the Dog is also being released on 9/17.
