In conjunction with the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA), Dan Deacon performed at the Perelman Theater (located in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts) in Philly on 4/12 (read show preview here). It was a veritable Simon Says dance party at the Kimmel Center with audience participation being taken to another level. Participation wasn’t limited to just the Dan Deacon app – it was a full on multilevel event of Dance Party USA proportions.
Deacon started off the night by asking the audience to point to a spot on the venue’s ceiling and to imagine it as their deepest darkest moment. Deacon then instructed them to point to the guys with the expensive cameras – yup, he even managed to get us involved (which was a surreal experience)! Opting not to use the stage, Deacon set up on the floor among the masses and worked hard to keep everybody engaged in what is sure to be an unforgettable night. Even with the pandemonium, Deacon pulled off double-duties of dance calling and button smashing/knob twisting/howling/music making without a hitch. It was a quirky highbrow meets lowbrow affair that had practically everybody exhausted and on the floor (including Deacon) by the end of the night; however, he still had enough in the tank to dish out high fives to whoever would have them.
Below is the official music video for “True Thrush” from Dan Deacon’s most recently released LP America.
