Fiddler extraordinaire Sara Watkins performed at the Tin Angel in Philly on 3/29. She was joined on stage by Watkins’ sibling (and former Nickel Creek co-member Sean). The crowd at the Tin Angel were enamored by her performance and on-stage banter (while joking with brother Sean). Sara is currently touring in follow-up of her sophomore LP Sun Midnight Sun (released in 2012). You can see the rest of her tour dates here, as well as listen to Sun Midnight Sun in its entirety on Spotify. FYI, track 3 of Sun Midnight Sun (a cover of The Everly Brothers’ “You’re the One I Love”) features guest vocal harmonies by none other than Fiona Apple.
You may already be familiar with Sara Watkins as a former member of the progressive bluegrass super-trio Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek disbanded in 2007 and former members Chris Thile and Sean Watkins have gone on to form Punch Brothers and Fiction Family, respectively. Sara released her self-titled debut LP in 2009, which featured a more subtle and stripped-down singer-songwriter approach compared to her work in Nickel Creek. Sun Midnight Sun is even more accessible and sees Sara taking a step deeper into crossover territory. See below for Sara Watkins’ official music video for “When It Pleases You”.
